AGE : Nineteen. OCCUPATION : Librarian. RESIDENCE : Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England. WAND : 11" Ash. Unicorn tail core. PATRONUS : Panther. ALIGNMENT : She would like to be completely neutral and have no leanings whatsoever, but she cannot help but to be a bit inclined toward the Order.
history Ernestine grew up in a pretty little house by the ocean with two extremely girly sisters and one rather effeminate brother. Ever since she was a toddler, Ernestine was a no-nonsense, no-frills sort of girl who shrieked and threw tantrums whenever her sisters tried to dress her up in cute little outfits whilst her brother was docile and smiled pleasantly. When Elliot wanted to go outside and skip stones, Ernestine went along, but only to sit on the side and critique his technique and tell him how he could get more skips before the stone went underwater. Most people wouldn't appreciate that, but Elliot was one of those boys who were genuinely nice and took everything everyone said to heart. Ernestine's sisters were quite the opposite and they were the epitome of the catty, popular girl in school everyone hated but wanted to be. The mixture of watching them say whatever they wanted without really caring how other people felt about it and spending most of her time with her carefree and light-hearted brother has made her the disinterestedly blunt person she is today.
When she turned eleven, Ernestine received her invitation to Hogwarts. As Very Practical people, the Nutcombes greeted Professor Sprout as they greeted all new people: Mr. Nutcombe demanded to know what sort of tomfoolery this was, Mrs. Nutcombe invited her in for tea over her husband's bellows, Adelaide and Charlotte snickered over her wardrobe, Elliot greeted her warmly with a placid smile, and Ernestine dismissed her disinterestedly. The family was very skeptical of the idea that their daughter was a witch at first, but they soon came to terms with it. Except Mr. Nutcombe, who insisted that this absolutely had to be a joke until Ernestine walked onto Platform Nine and Three-quarters. Ernestine was very impressed with Hogwarts and decided that it was very much an institution that was deserving of her brilliant mind, though she was probably just impressed by the moving portraits, giant staircases, suits of armor, and enchanted ceiling.
Ernestine told Elliot all about the enchanted ceilings and the moving portraits and everything else at Hogwarts, on his insistence, mainly because he loved getting post by owl so much, and still does, though he is a little less excited by owl post now. She did well in the classes that involved more practical magic, a bit ironically, considering she hadn't known magic actually existed until a few months ago, but didn't bother putting in the extra effort to remember the effects of each plant or know how her potion should bubble when she added the next ingredient. But she did take the time to sit down and memorize dates for History of Magic, she should know about this new world she had been dropped into, if she was going to live in it. Her second year, Ernestine added Ancient Runes and Arithmancy to her schedule. The patterns made sense to her. She kept the same classes for a few years until she took her O.W.L.s and earned mostly Exceeds Expectations and a few Outstandings and Acceptables, but earned quite a few Poors and Dreadfuls as well, purely because of her lack of interest in some subjects. After taking her O.W.L.s, Ernestine dropped to just Ancient Runes, Arithmancy, Charms, and Transfiguration. It doesn't exactly fit into the path of any specific career, but Ernestine has no idea what she wants to do with the rest of her life yet. Her parents encourage her to put some thought into it, since she is in her last year of school, but Ernestine is thoroughly convinced that it'll come to her in a dream, or in the form of a cloud, or some other subconscious thought.
personality! If there was one word to describe Ernestine, it would be "unfazed." She's calm, collected, and takes all sorts of news well, if you call taking news well staring blankly and saying "Hmm" in response. This is partly because she has a habit of daydreaming and it takes her a few minutes to realize someone's standing in front of her, let alone saying something, and partly because she absolutely does not give a damn about anything anyone has to say.
Ernestine is not nice. On the other hand, she's not mean, either. She has a tendency to be a bit more biting to people she's closer to because she knows they know she means well. There are times she's scathingly honest in a way that's not entirely pleasant, but that's only because she cares and thinks they deserve to be told the truth. Ernestine does not know how to sugarcoat things and always tends to sound a bit crude and sarcastic. So, instead of saying "I think you may find that another dress would fit you more comfortably," she'll say "That dress looks awful on you." Though if it were a serious matter, like say, if someone had died, she would try to sound sympathetic, though she would probably fail.
Ernestine is startlingly clever and she gets exemplary marks in the classes she's good at, but gets horrid marks in those she has less interest in or are less than competent with. That's to be expected, of course, but rather than taking the time to study the subjects she's bad at, she refuses to put extra effort into things. She believes that you should be good at things because you're good at them, not because you have nothing better to do than to perfect a skill you're mediocre at. Though, that's not to say she doesn't admire those who do work hard, because it takes patience and determination, and she finds that admirable, but Ernestine would rather sit and ponder the different questions of life. She likes to sit and think about things, and does not like it when that thinking time is disturbed. She thinks about how they came about one and two equaling three, how people thought religion would be a good idea, why people think about the sorts of things she does - Ernestine thinks about anything and everything.
appearance! Ernestine has quite a lot of freckles and is rather elfish, neither of which are physical traits she's quite happy with. Ernestine would be perfectly fine with a bit of freckles, but she has FRECKLES! Meaning, far too many to count on far too many places on her body. Supposedly, Ernestine looks an elf, which she wouldn't mind at all if other people weren't constantly bringing it up in irritating ways. They say she looks a bit mischievous and up to something and has been asked "What are you up to?" more times than she would like when she's not up to anything at all, and love to comment on how her ears are just a little bit pointed.
All three Nutcombe girls look startlingly like their mother - tall, slender, blonde, and light-eyed. Although they look incredibly similar, there are things that very distinctly set Ernestine apart from the women in her family. She's a bit plainer and less glamorous than her sisters and mother and doesn't have the same elegant fashion sense they do. Her robes and clothes tend to not flatter her body, partly because she doesn't know what does flatter her body and partly because she doesn't care. Fabric tends to fall off her frame unattractively and hide what little curves she has - basically, it makes her look like a giant cylinder.
